In a security breach information of 5.2 million guests has been exposed said by Marriott. This is the second time in recent years, when the data has been stolen. In 2018, the first data breach happened.
In this breach personal information such as names, birthdays and phone numbers may have been taken. Along with this language preferences and loyalty accounts were also stolen. An investigation is still in process.
According to Marriott, there is no reason to believe that payment information was leaked.
In late February, an unspecified hotel chain’s system had been compromised and guest information had been examined by hackers. They have entered into the system by acquiring login credentials of two employees.
Company believed that the activity began in mid January. Marriott said that they have notified guests whose information has been stolen with emails and launched a dedicated website with resources for those affected.
A personal information monitoring was provided by the company to guests whose information was stolen.
Last data breach happened in late 2018, in which 500 million guests have been affected. In this breach 327 million records were stolen including personal information such as mailing addresses and passport numbers. A fine of $123 million was taken from Marriott by UK authorities.
